PETA is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an animal rights group. They're against using animals in any way -- for food, fur, experiments, whatever.

Ah, we have similar.. the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), though they're not against the eating and use of them, just the cruelty bit.
You're right, it's unneccesary to just let them sit and flop around, but he doesn't really think too much about such things.
Dad's an old-fashioned southern man, in a lot of ways. He highly disapproves of the fact that my sister dates black and latino guys almost exclusively; I suspect the same of my faggotry but he doesn't say anything about it. He's atypical in some aspects though.. for instance, he agrees that the war on [drugs/iraq] is pointless, and that despite his own opinions, it's not up to him to make others' decisions. Several of my uncles think differently; they'd have anything they didn't like outlawed. One of them was so offended at seeing a woman with armpit hair on TV that he went into an angry rant about how she shouldn't have been let in front of the camera in the first place. When asked why she should shave it when she was born with it, his reply was "It's about cleanliness!".. whatever.
bathtub would be bad, unless you treated the water. The chlorine and metals would kill them.
They will also drown in just a bucket unless you frequently disturb the surface of the water causing air to disolve in the water. (or you can bubble air through it)
