I posted this in open_letters earlier, thought I'd re-post it here.

This topic has bugged me for awhile. I'm glad to see that lately there's been a push for better education on the topic; billboards, web and subway ads, and whatnot. Hopefully it'll work.

When I see them or they try to hit me up, I always repond with links to current infection statistics. They don't respond, heh, and I doubt it gets through their skull, but perhaps it'll make them think for a minute.

Dear gay men:

You realize people are still contracting HIV, right? And that too many who are infected won't inform you of such? You do? Whaddaya mean, don't talk to you like you're stupid?

If you're not stupid, then why is it every time I get on a gay chat room, I still find people advertising that they want someone to bareback?

Even worse, people that want to shoot crystal and bareback?

You wear your hideous Pride jewelry, put the bumper stickers on your car, hang the flags in your window. You support gay bars, gay dentists, gay physicians, gay adoption agencies, gay insurance. Underneath all that blind assimilationism, however, is this really odd undercurrent: a slow-motion cultural suicide of stupid drugs and even stupider sexual practices.

You're not going to be taken seriously by anyone who knows you until you grow up and start taking care of each other. That means being responsible. It's fun to party, it's fun to fuck, and sure, most everyone smokes a little weed on occasion. The thing you don't realize, perhaps, is you don't have to be self-destructive to have a good time.

Make better choices. Please?
