alright, so there's the meme.

um, it makes me want to ask a simple question:

what the hell does marriage have to do with government? why should I be viewed differently as a citizen simply because of my relationship status? eh?

I could be with a man, a woman, or a handful of each, and still have the same needs as far as the government is concerned.

why should I, or anyone else, need a piece of paper declaring that I'm "with" another individual?

fuck gay marriage. actually, fuck marriage in general -- it ain't got nothing to do with anything.

Unfortunately, marriage has become a contract between two people of opposite sex and the state. The state is a superfluous institution that was created to spoil the lives of human beings.

you know, thats a point I've been making in a few discussions myself...

The government has a legitimate interest in recognising the formation of a household - things like shared property rights, taxes, inheritance, changes in next-of-kin status. Personally I'd say that equal protection means that they should therefore recgnise all households in exactly the same way, no matter their composition.

Since at the time that these laws were written, the way households were formed was almost univerally via a marriage ceremony, and the church kept all the records, civil law made a huge mistake and used the same word in formulating statutes.

In the strictly legal context, however, "marriage" means something entirely distinct from any religious meaning. Its way time that we recognised this and separated the religious concept of marriage completely from any legal recognition of a households formation.

Your not wanting to get married is as irrelevant as a black man in the 60's not wanting to vote. The issue is that many homosexuals DO want to get married.

my problem is not with an individual's desire to be married.

my problem is with the idea that the government should somehow have a place in determining the rules behind to gets to marry.

the government shouldn't have any place recognising my or anyone else's romantic relationships.

I understand the difficulties that viewpoint may present when considering insurance, property rights, hospital visitation, etc.. but really, I should be able to confer personal rights to anyone I choose, despite the status of the relationship I have with that person.

people keep asking, "should two men/women/aardvarks be able to get married?" .. that sounds like a shroud on top of a better one: should I be able to grant [the rights normally associated with marriage for no reason other than sexist biblical tradition] to a person or people of my own choosing?

My only argument FOR gay marriage is the legal possibility of gay divorce. As cynical as this may seem, it's very practical. For instance, let's say that I'm with my partner for fifteen years, and things fall apart and it's an ugly, bitter situation. Now if we were married, there would be legal proceedings that would handle the division of stuff and property, no matter how nasty we were being to each other. But right now, the free legal advice that's given is: "Grab whatever's not nailed down and run like a Watt's Rioter."
